I absolutely love the high energy at the time of the Full Moon.
Some people don't like it; it can make them feel too wired or restless, and being unable to sleep is a common theme around the time of the Full Moon.
But for myself (and others), it's a special time of magical, mystical energy that can be tapped into.
Every Full Moon gives us a chance to release anything that no longer serves us, or anything that is no longer welcome in our lives.
A Full Moon Release is like a symbolic gesture to the Universe.
And the Universe LOVES symbolic gestures.
There's something about ritualising our actions that seems to lend them power.
And as a practicing 'Witch', the more power I can get behind my actions, the better.
But it's not just Witches that work with the powerful energy of the Moon.
ANYONE can harness the Moon's power to help them in their lives or to help with specific tasks.
ANYONE can perform a ritual of some kind.
Rituals DON'T have to be linked to religion, or specific groups.
We have strong and powerful energy to work with at the time of the Full Moon.
And we can all tap into it.
There are two ways of working with Full Moon energy
As the Moon is waxing towards the peak of her energy, right up until and including the actual minute that the Moon becomes full, we can use this time and the Moon's growing energy, to work on manifesting the things we want in life.
The waxing energy phases are the time from when the Moon becomes New (the New Moon, when the Moon cycle begins), up until the Full Moon itself.
The Full Moon is the time when the Moon's energy is at its most powerful, but at this time, we are only half way through the Moon's full monthly cycle.
(A full cycle of the Moon is called a lunation, by the way.)
The Full Moon phase is when we can lay out our crystals, tarot cards, water for 'charging', Talismans, and any other, magical tools and items we might have.
Putting these items in the light of the Full Moon allows them to be bathed by the moon's powerful beams, and doing this soaks up the rays and 'charges' the items with power, and magical energy.
Just after the Full Moon, literally from the minute she starts to wane again, we can use the Moon's energy to do release and forgiveness work.
We can do this kind of work anytime during the waning half of the Moon's cycle, but at the time just after the Full Moon, any ritual you perform is definitely more powerful.
In a Full Moon Release Ritual........
We can symbolically release negative thought patterns and traits that may be keeping us stuck in bad habits and unhelpful behaviours.
The Full Moon shines a powerful light;she illuminates everything that may have previously been hidden to us.
So, at the time of the Full Moon, we can turn inwards, maybe meditate, and ask ourselves what is no longer working in our lives.
We can ask ourselves what is no longer serving us, and what we can let go of.
It's a good time to journal around these questions.
It’s an excellent time to banish bad habits and addictions
and to release anything at all that is not good for us, or is hampering our personal life or growth.
We can release those bad habits.
We can release toxic relationships and people who really have no place in our lives.
We can even release those outdated ideas and ways of thinking that are keeping us stuck.
The full moon is also a really good time to look at where we can work on issues of forgiveness.
Forgiving others - and even forgiving ourselves - can be really tough.
We're not forgiving other people for their benefit;we're doing it for our own benefit.
The energy just after the full moon is really supportive when working on forgiveness.
So how do we do all of this?
How do we release and let go at the full moon?
How do we practice forgiveness?
My personal practice
One way that I do this, is to look at which sign of the zodiac the full moon is currently in.
The Moon spends roughly about 2.5 days in each sign of the Zodiac.
As the moon passes through each sign of the zodiac, through its 29.5 day cycle during the month, it brings a different energy, depending on the zodiac sign that it’s in, at that time.
At the time of the Full Moon, I like to look at the negative and positive qualities of the zodiac sign that the Moon is in.
I then use those traits to look at where I might need to release or let go of something, and where I can practice forgiveness, if need be.
For example if the full moon is in the sign of Taurus at the time of the Full Moon, I'd look at the positive and negative traits and characteristics of the Taurean energy.
When expressing positively:
Taurus can be practical, earthy, and resourceful.
Taurus can be reliable, trustworthy and very loyal.
Taurus can be patient, persistent, and determined.
Taurus is the first of the earth signs and usually loves domesticity, nice surroundings, and their food!
Nature is usually important to Taurus, it brings a very grounded energy with it.
Taurus is usually industrious, and not afraid of hard work.
At the time of the Full Moon, with the focus on the astrological energy, I would ask myself questions around the positive traits.
Where can I be more practical?
Where can I be more reliable?
Where can I maybe work harder, be more grounded, be more persistent or consistent etc.
And then I'd try to emulate those more positive traits in my daily life.
When expressing negatively:
Taurus can be too cautious, and overly security conscious.
Taurus can be lazy, lethargic and sluggish.
The Taurus that likes nice things can become materialistic.
Taurus can become stubborn, or very fixed in their ways.
The taurus that likes its food can have a voracious appetite that can't be controlled!
(These lists are not exhaustive by the way; you can easily Google more information about the traits of all of the signs of the Zodiac.)
So looking at some of these Taurean themes.....
I could ask myself some questions that relate to the more negative traits of Taurus.
Because it's the NEGATIVE things that I want to release and let go of!
For example, I could ask myself:
Where might I have become lazy or complacent?
Where might I have been stubborn, with an unyielding way of thinking that isn't doing me any good?
Have I been eating too much? Or eating too many rich, and fattening foods?
Have I been cautious, to the point where, it might be stopping me from moving forward?
Have I been materialistic in any way?
Leading up to the Full Moon, I would ask myself these questions.
Sometime after the moon has become full, usually within eight hours of the Full Moon, I like to meditate on the questions I'm asking myself, for clarity.
I might, (read, usually) journal my feelings around the questions, and see what comes up for me.
by digging deep and really putting some thought into my answers, I can come up with ideas of exactly what I can let go of.
You can do this too.
Maybe you already know what you want to let go of?
When you are ready you can sit down with your journal or a piece of paper and write at the top of it:
Then make a list of everything that you want to banish from your life.
List all of the negative and unhelpful thought patterns that are keeping you stuck.
If you're trying to release an unhealthy attachment to a person, write a list of the reasons why they need to be gone from your life.
You can also list every situation where you feel you can practice forgiveness, both for yourself, and others.
This exercise might bring up emotions for you. It usually does for me.
Feel into the emotions, acknowledge them, know that it's ok to feel them, and then try to symbolically release them.
When you have finished writing your list of things to release, you can take your list(s) outside and burn it/them under the light of the Full Moon.
If it's not practical to go outside and burn your list(s), you can rip them to shreds and either flush them down a toilet, throw them into a trash can, or bury them somewhere.
The most important thing at this point is the act of getting rid of what you have written.
You can do this powerful exercise at every full moon
You don't even have to stick to the themes brought about by the sign of the zodiac.
If you feel an urge to release something at the time of the Full Moon, that isn't related to the astrological energy, then just go ahead and do it.
If you do decide to work with the themes of the astrological energy at every full moon throughout the year, by the end of the year you will have worked on almost every area of your life.
Give it a go.
Like I said, the Universe LOVES symbolic gestures.
And a personal 'ritual', in fact any ritual, with your own energy behind it, is always very, very powerful.
I'd love to hear how you felt after doing a Full Moon Release!
